Braces Guide: Understanding Treatment and Accessing Affordable Braces Solutions
Does it hurt to get braces?
Many patients wonder about discomfort during orthodontic treatment. While you may experience some initial soreness after getting braces or after adjustment appointments, most patients find the discomfort is minimal and temporary.
What about treatment costs?
Treatment fees at Sosebee & Britt Orthodontics are individually tailored. Just as every smile is different, there is no standard treatment fee. Our fees are based on the type of treatment and the length of time treatment is needed. We’re proud to offer affordable braces options and exams or consultation appointments. Our treatment coordinator will review fees, insurance coverage, and our other payment plans with you.
Can I play sports with braces?
You can absolutely play sports while receiving orthodontic treatment! If you participate in high-impact sports, we provide you with a protective mouthguard to wear to safeguard your teeth and braces.
Can I play musical instruments with braces?
Yes! You can continue playing horned musical instruments during your orthodontic treatment. There will be a short adjustment period initially, but many of our patients play musical instruments without any issues.
What can I eat with braces?
Don’t worry; you’ll be enjoying popcorn and snacking on potato chips again once your treatment is complete! In the meantime, you’ll need to take special care to avoid foods that could damage your braces.
Foods to Avoid with Braces
- Chewy foods — bagels, licorice
- Crunchy foods — popcorn, chips, ice
- Sticky foods — caramel candies, chewing gum
- Hard foods — nuts, hard candies
- Foods that require biting into — corn on the cob, apples, carrots
Foods You CAN Eat With Braces
- Dairy — soft cheese, pudding, milk-based drinks
- Breads — soft tortillas, pancakes, muffins without nuts
- Grains — pasta, soft cooked rice
- Meats/poultry — soft cooked chicken, meatballs, lunch meats
- Seafood — tuna, salmon, crab cakes
- Vegetables — mashed potatoes, steamed spinach, beans
- Fruits — applesauce, bananas, fruit juice
- Treats — ice cream without nuts, milkshakes, Jell-O, soft cake
How long do I wear braces?
Treatment duration is often a key consideration. At Sosebee & Britt Orthodontics, we create individualized treatment plans for each patient. Every mouth is different, and we will review your projected treatment length in detail during your exam appointment.
How long do I wear the retainer?
Retainers are lifelong! No matter how long you’ve been finished with treatment, your teeth will always have a tendency to shift. That’s why it’s crucial to be consistent with retainer wear. Most of the time, retainers are only worn at night and are very comfortable to sleep in. Once you get used to them, your teeth will feel incomplete without them!
Do I still need checkups with the dentist when I have braces?
Yes! In fact, regular dental checkups become even more important during orthodontic treatment. With braces, food may get caught in places your toothbrush can’t reach. This can cause bacteria to build up and potentially lead to cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. Our team works closely with your dentist to ensure your teeth stay clean and healthy throughout your orthodontic journey.
